The Mental Health Clinician, as a member of the School Based Behavioral Health Services team, provides school based counseling to children and their families at elementary, middle or high school sites in Alameda County.
Performs assessments (using CANS), articulates diagnostic formulations (with measurable objectives), and makes recommendations with regards to the impact of mental health issues on academic performance. Provides case management services and makes referrals as appropriate. Provides individual treatment; works collaboratively with families, teachers, administrators and school site staff. Develops and facilitates treatment groups.
B. QUALIFICATIONS and COMPETENCY FACTORS
- LCSW, MFT or registered Intern with BBS.
- Experience with Medi-Cal documentation.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) Preferred.
- Experience providing therapeutic services to children and families utilizing evidence based practices, play therapy, expressive arts, CBT and trauma informed methods.
- Sensitive to the needs of vulnerable populations.
- Committed to culturally informed practice and a multicultural learning environment.
- Experience in school-based social work/therapy or prior teaching experience preferred as well as experience integrating well into school based culture.
- Ability to work as a team member and contribute to program development.
- Ability and willingness to maintain clear and complete records, meet strict deadlines for written reports and chart documentation, and compile and report monthly statistics.
- Must be extremely organized, paying closed attention to details and procedures.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and government regulations.
- Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, and field notes.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, mental health professionals, parents or guardians, teachers, school administrators, and interns and volunteers.
- Ability to drive with valid driver's license/auto insurance, and access to a vehicle as needed.
D. WORKING CONDITIONS and JOB SETTING
- Provides short term (3-9 months), trauma informed, solution focused individual, group and family counseling as well as classroom based interventions and school climate work.
- Provides consultation to teachers and site administrators on a variety of topics including child development, behavior management, learning styles of children, and various mental health considerations.
- Completes comprehensive child/family assessment (using CANS), formulates diagnostic picture and develops comprehensive treatment plans including substantiating impairment and developing measurable treatment objectives, and communicates recommendations to school and family.
- Maintains case records, including charts, treatment plans, termination summaries, statistics reports, and other reports as required.
- Manages and maintains due dates and timeline procedures as related to MediCal Standards and EBAC best practices.
- Provides case management services for children and families.
- Contributes to the Behavioral Health Services team by participating in program development and planning.
- Provides case presentations at clinical team meetings.
- Actively participates in both group and individual clinical supervision by being prepared to discuss case work, interventions, counter-transference issues, and theoretical rationales.
- Participates in core team meetings (including IEPs, COST and SSTs) at site placement.
- Supervises/mentors para-professionals, volunteers, and interns as program demands.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Work is primarily in an office / school setting with children or youth.
- Program headquarters is in a multi-story building with stairs that need to be climbed for access to the other floors as needed.
- Because work is directly with children, full mobility is required for standing, walking, sitting, using hands, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- Primary work is in challenging, under-resourced school settings, in neighborhoods impacted by poverty, community violence, crime, systemic racism and oppression.
- May need to use child-size chairs for sitting.
- Regular driving is required.
- Periodic lifting up to 25 pounds is required.
